Five Tips For Choosing Rockin Outfits For Your Engagement Session
WOOHOO YOU’RE FREAKING ENGAGED! LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!
So you’re engaged and now you’re looking to celebrate by booking some engagement photos or you’re on the hunt for an amazing wedding photographer and hoping to get some engagement photos done by them. Whatever your situation, panicking about what to wear to your session is always a common theme! One of my main goals with every session is to stop the anxiousness about picking out what to wear, we do not need more stress in our lives! Also, ladies… I know that you’re most likely the one that has to pick out the outfits for not only yourself, but for your man as well haha. It can be stressful enough planning outfits for one person, so trying to coordinate outfits can sometimes lead to wanting to rip your hair out! Let’s kick those bad thoughts to the curb with these 5 handy tips on choosing some rockin outfits for your engagement photos!
Don’t match each other, wear complementary colors instead
If you do one thing at all, please make it be choosing amazing colors! You two do not want to show up to photos wearing the same colored shirt or pants because you’ll blend together and look like a colorful blob in your photos! Make sure that you choose different colors so there’s separation between the two of you. Each photographer has a different style, but with my style I believe that earthy tones and neutral colors are the best route to take! Bright colors tend to be totally distracting and take away from your face and the landscape. When you wear earth tones, your faces will stand out and you’ll look great in the landscape that you’re in. You should be the focus of your pictures, not your outfits! When choosing colors, think about maroon, mustard yellow, a deep teal, forest green, etc. You can also pull colors from the landscape you will be in and color match certain elements of your outfits to it for a more cohesive look!
2. Wear something that you feel comfortable in
I mean two things by this: your clothes should be nonrestrictive and you should feel confident in them. When you’re wearing comfy, nonrestrictive clothes you can move around sooo much more easily! You don’t have to worry about constantly pulling your pants up, pulling your shirt down, fixing straps, literally any annoying thing that can come with some clothing items. You’ll be able to run around and jump on your lover and do whatever the heck you want without worrying about what your clothes are doing! You’ll be focused on your cutie instead of focusing on fixing your clothes all of the time. You’ll also feel a millllllllion times better if you wear something that you feel confident in! You know those outfits that you try on and dance in the dressing room because they feel so great? Yeah, wear those types of outfits! When you feel confident, you’ll feel more free and you’ll have more fun!
3. Bring Options
Options are your best friend! I always recommend bringing 5 tops and 3 bottoms because we can mix and match them during the session! Outfit choices really depend on the location and the light, so it’s nice to have different pieces to pick from. Your photographer should alwaaays help you pair outfits together! It helps a lot to see different clothes in person to really pair them together, so always bring along all of your options! Plus, if you bring along some of your favorite tops and bottoms or dresses for your photographer to put together, you really don’t have to spend much time pairing things! I always say that it’s best to bring more than you need than to wish you brought something but you left it at home. You can never overpack for photos, just don’t expect to wear everything you bring. You’ll get a bigger variety of photos if you bring more clothing options since you’ll be able to wear more outfits!
Additional tip: Send your photographer photos of the outfits you are thinking of beforehand so they know in advance what you plan on bringing so that you can spend more time taking photos during the session and less time deciding what to wear at what location. When you send photos of your outfit options, your photographer can decide ahead of time what will look best when/where! They can also steer you in the right direction if you’re totally lost!
4. Choose clothes that aren’t distracting
Now is not the time to wear your shirt that says “Hollister” across the front of it. Avoid big logos at alllllll costs because it really takes away from the photos. People should be drawn to the emotion and your faces in the photos, not what your shirt says! Plus, depending on how you’re standing, the letters can get smashed together and you won’t be able to read it 100% of the time. Some graphic t-shirts can be okay depending on the vibe of the session and the location, but I always advise to stay away from huge logos/words. Big, chunky patterns can also be distracting and take away from the photos. Smaller patterns are usually always better so that you stand out more! Remember, you want the focus to be on the two of you, not on your clothes! Big patterns always draw peoples eyes straight to them, so try to stay away from them.
5. Use Pinterest
Pinterest is seriously the best place to find outfit inspiration! If you don’t know where to start with choosing what to wear, search things like “Engagement Photos” or “Summer Engagement Photos” (insert whatever season you are doing your photos in) or even search your style + “engagement photos” or “engagement session.” You’ll find thousands of great photos and will be able to envision different clothing items and colors. You can pin all of your favorites onto a board and scroll through your board and see what all of those pins have in common! Navigating through Pinterest will make it a lot easier to decide what kind of outfits you want to wear for your engagement session!
